Recycling the Tetra Pak: these ubiquitous drinks cartons consists of paper along with some aluminium and polyethylene plastic. Up until recently when a Tetra Pak was recycled, the paper and cellulose were recovered and reused but the remaining parts were too difficult to refine. Now a new process has been developed that takes those leftovers and turns them into fine granules that can be used to make useful items such as this pen. Recycling drinks cartons in this way leads to savings of 75% on fossil fuels, 90% on water, and up to 70% on CO2 emissions (compared to using new raw materials).
