Iqoniq Clothing: Provably-Greener
Nobody wants to feel guilty wearing something that harms the planet, but the truth is every product will have some adverse affect on the environment. Many manufacturers throw around positive-sounding claims for their products, claims of being sustainable, or green or eco-friendly, but how reliable are those claims really, and how often are their reassurances simply greenwashing?
That question is why fashion brand Iqoniq launched its low impact clothing range with an emphasis on maximum transparency on the environmental effects of production. To this end they've applied some innovative methodologies and cutting edge technologies to verify their claims of a reduced impact on the natural world...
Environmental Impact Assessment by Made2Flow
Iqoniq collaborate with a company called Made2Flow who assess the environmental impact of every product. They calculate the impacts in three areas: greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 footprint in kg), water usage, and land usage.
The data is gathered directly from the supply chain to calculate these impacts for each garment. They also provide benchmark values for comparison - the savings shown represent the percentage saved compared to the benchmark product when customers choose Iqoniq products.
Fully Traceable and Blockchain Verification by AWARE™
Iqoniq ensures the trustworthiness of its sustainability claims through the use of a traceability platform called Aware™. This partnership allows them to provide evidence and avoid misleading information or "greenwashing". Aware™ employs tracer and blockchain technologies to make data publicly accessible, enabling the tracking and validation of the entire sustainability journey of textiles, from their origin to the end consumer.
Digital Product Passport (DPP)
The DPP is a powerful tool that enhances transparency and empowers consumers to make sustainable choices with confidence. Every Iqoniq product has an Aware™ Virtual ID, which serves as a unique identifier within the DPP system.
By utilising the Aware™ blockchain application, the DPP enables consumers to easily access trusted impact data by simply scanning a QR code. This data, provided directly by the makers of the products, offers a comprehensive overview of the environmental impact, as well as the complete production journey of each garment.
With the Digital Product Passport buyers can easily access this information and make informed choices based on the true environmental impacts of a product.
The Range
Iqoniq have come up with a unisex and all-year-round collection that currently covers:
- T-shirts
- Poloshirts
- Sweatshirts
- Joggers
Everything is designed to be stylish, comfortable and wearable, so the user gets maximum wear out of the garment. All the items come in three colour groups, undyed heather colours, essential dyed colours and seasonal colours, so the wearer can coordinate their look or mix and match as the mood takes them.
The Materials
Everything is made from 100% cotton, woven from a blend of:
- 50% recycled cotton (certified to the Global Recycled Standard)
- 50% organic cotton (certified to the Organic Content Standard)
The recycled cotton is made from pre-consumer cutting waste supplied from local markets close to where the factories are located. That waste comes from a variety of different sources, fabrics, and product lines, so even though its carefully sorted by colour, this can occasionally affect the final product, such as if the yarn had a slightly different shade or thickness in places.
The undyed heather colours and the natural raw colour offered by Iqoniq are made using more sustainable water-free processes, and it's here in particular where you may notice subtle colour variations between different pieces. But rather than defects we see these as the hallmark of recycled fabrics and a further proof of their greater sustainability.
The Branding
Iqoniq will custom brand their apparel with your design using low impact decoration techniques, either digital or screen transfer or embroidery. The inks they use hold an OEKO-TEX® Eco Passport, ensuring that even this final stage of production holds to their sustainability ethos.
A Global View on Responsibility
Lastly, Iqoniq strive continuously to improve working conditions in the supply chain, and ensure all their products are manufactured in facilities with a valid social audit according to the amfori BSCI auditing framework and Code of Conduct.
Furthermore, they donate 2% of proceeds from each product sold to Water.org, a global non-profit organisation bringing water and sanitation to the world.
